For years the family of Voskanyans has strived for better housing conditions. The family includes Hrachik (53), his wife Narineh (47) and daughter Anahit (19). Hrachik is the director of the village cultural centre. Narineh is engaged in commerce and Anahit is a student at a medical college.
Previously the family had bare walls of two rooms, called home. Later, they afforded to add a bathroom unit, a kitchen and two other rooms on their own. Still, there is a lot to do to make it a decent place to live in. Currently the house completely lacks inner renovation; it is very humid and mouldy in certain places. The flooring is concrete, the walls and the ceiling need to be plastered and painted.
“I would like Habitat to extend a hand up to more and more needy families, who cannot afford to improve their housing needs on their own,” says Narineh.
The Voskanyans did not dare to start the renovation as the income was hardly enough to cover daily expenses. Hrachik has a heart disease and spends a lot of money on his medicines. Besides, Anahit’s education costs a lot of money.
The family had no access to high percentage loans that banks and credit organizations offer in Armenia. Although they have managed to save a small amount for improving their living conditions, it is only “a drop in the ocean”. Only an affordable Habitat loan could solve their housing needs and enable them to hope for a better future.
