Armenia is highly vulnerable to earthquakes and other natural disasters. It is both one of the most seismically active countries in Europe and also at risk for landslides, riverine flooding, and the risk associated with earthquakes of flooding through damage or failure of hydro-electric dams. Armenia also has one nuclear power plant.
Whilst it does not directly affect housing, Armenia is also prone to hail storms, which through their damage to agriculture can have a negative effect on the local economy, and thus on local housing standards and resilience to other disasters.
As identified in the World Bank’s 2009 risk analysis, Armenia is a multi-hazard hotspot that is threatened by both high exposure and substantial vulnerability.
The Habitat for Humanity Armenia Disaster Preparedness and Response Strategy has been established in order to define the basic principles, standards, and developmental and collaborative framework to be implemented by Habitat for Humanity Armenia in its disaster response program. It describes the manner in which Habitat for Humanity Armenia will respond to disasters within Armenia and the role the organization will engage in disaster mitigation and preparedness.
The established policies will allow Habitat for Humanity Armenia, following a realistic assessment of needs and of office capacity, and with the support of HFHI, to efficiently respond to disasters, train relevant staff, and strengthen donor relations. This plan has been developed by the Habitat for Humanity Armenia Disaster Response Program team, with support from the ECA Associate Director for Construction Design & Technology, Disaster Response, and is in accordance to the HFHI Global Disaster Response Guidelines.
Currently Habitat for Humanity Armenia is a member of Extended Disaster Management Team and National Platform and is a member in Shelter, Early Recovery and WASH Clusters.
Habitat for Humanity Armenia will get involve in joint action in case of major emergencies in support of the Armenian Government efforts to save lives and minimize losses.
