HFH Armenia team visits Spitak, the town of upcoming core/starter home project
Spitak, Armenia – On July 15, the HFH Armenia team took part in the 20th anniversary celebrations of Spitak, the epicenter of the 1988 devastating earthquake. The celebrations, titles "Spitak, a city of friendship," kicked off the excavation works to build a new town in Spitak, and to honor all the countries who have contributed in the revival of Spitak following to the earthquake. RA President Serge Sargsyan and the ambassadors of all the countries contributed in the rebirth of the city were attending the celebrations.
During the ceremonies, RA Minister of Urban Development Vardan Vardanyan stated that within the circles of the earthquake zone restoration project, the housing problems of about 7,000 families in Spitak, Gyumri, and the regiboring towns and villages will be solved by 2013.
Spitak is the town where in the coming weeks HFH Armenia will start implementing its upcoming major project. The pilot phase of the project will serve 10 families still suffering from the earthquake to move from their temporary shelters into decent core/starter homes. In the coming three years, the project targets to serve another 100 families, thus reaching the number of families to be served in Spitak to 110.
"What Habitat is doing in Spitak is to give a hand up to 110 families to finally have their simple, decent, and affordable homes," said Habitat for Humanity Armenia Executive Director Irina Vanyan. "All these years, these families have been living in temporary shelters or domiks, and now, through partnering with Habitat, they have real hopes of improving their housing conditions. Habitat's self-help approach is working in Khachik, Nshavan, and other villages in Armenia, and is going to work for these 110 families, as well."
Regarding the implementation and the success of this project, HFH Armenia is in close cooperation with RA Ministry of Urban Development and the Municipality of Spitak. The latter has already allocated lands for the pilot phase of the project.
On July 15, HFH Armenia team visited the site where the project "From Survival to revival" will be implemented and carried out technical preparations for project to be launched in the coming weeks.
