First Global
Village team of the building season 2009 in Armenia
YEREVAN,
ARMENIA (May 26, 2009) – Habitat for Humanity Armenia
welcomed its first Global Village team for the building
season of 2009. The team of eight volunteers from different
states of the United States of America is working with a
Habitat partner family in Nshavan, the village where Habitat
for Humanity Armenia relaunched its activities in October
2008.
Global
Village offers its participants an opportunity to travel
all over the world and build hand in hand with Habitat partner
families in need of improving their housing conditions.
“Global
Village is bringing together people from different backgrounds
and different parts of the World by sharing and building
relationships on the worksite,” says Zuzka Michalidesova,
the Global Village Coordinator of Habitat for Humanity Europe
and Central Asia.
During
the eight days of their trip to Armenia, the volunteers
will build alongside the family of Samvel Margaryan, the
homeowner family, who, together with their friends, invests
their own labor into building their home and the homes of
their friends and relatives.
“It
is through partnering with Habitat for Humanity Armenia,
that the Margaryan family has found hope to complete the
reconstruction of their home they had started years ago
and which seemed to last forever. “If not for Habitat
for Humanity Armenia and the volunteers, we could not give
our children a decent home,” said Asia Margaryan.
The
Global Village brings together the international and the
local volunteers, the Habitat families, and the HFH Armenia
staff members around one exiting experience, providing decent
housing conditions for partner families.
“For a lot of people,
the Global Village is a wonderful way to come together and
learn new skills, and also learn about new cultures and
make new friends,” says Shelly Whittet, the team leader.
“I am happy that through Habitat for Humanity, our
volunteers are able to understand poverty and the good parts
of life in another part of the world.”
“Habitat
for Humanity Armenia is delighted to welcome our volunteers,
who have traveled long distances to extend a hand up to
the family of Samvel Margaryan,” says Irina Vanyan,
the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Armenia.
“The presence, the efforts, and the contributions
of our volunteers is really important for the success of
the mission of Habitat for Humanity Armenia.”
During
the building season of 2009, Habitat for Humanity Armenia
looks forward to hosting another five Global Village teams
to build with families in Nshavan.
