The U.S. Ambassador to Armenia builds with Habitat in Nor Kharberd
On September 10, 2010 U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Marie L. Yovanovitch will participated in a one-day Habitat for Humanity build alongside a team of U.S. diplomatic mission employees. Habitat for Humanity Armenia staff, and local families and volunteers. This public service action is part of the U.S. Embassy’s commemoration of the events of September 11, 2001.
The team of American and Armenian volunteers will be working in the village of Nor Kharberd in Ararat region, 11 kilometers away from the capital, Yerevan, to help a low-income Armenian family realize its dream of a simple, decent home. During the day, volunteers will be sanding and covering floors and carrying out other construction related tasks.
Habitat for Humanity Armenia has been working in Nor Kharberd since May 2010. It is assisting low-income Armenian families with renovating and completing unfinished homes. Since the start of the project, Habitat Armenia has supported three families in Nor Kharberd. The plan is to expand the program to assist 200 other families in the town.
Habitat for Humanity has been active in Armenia since the year 2000, renovating and repairing houses, offering housing microfinance services and advocating for affordable housing, all with partner families. To date it has renovated more than 600 homes countrywide.
